School Chair & Table Height Guide

Choosing the Right Size for Primary and Secondary Students

The right chair and table height can make a significant difference to student comfort, posture and the overall classroom experience.

Because students of the same age can vary considerably in height, school year levels should be used as a general guide rather than the only factor when choosing classroom furniture.

Use the guide below as a practical starting point when selecting chairs, desks and tables for Australian primary and secondary schools.

Recommended classroom chair and table heights by year level. Use student height and individual requirements as the final guide when selecting furniture.

Recommended Classroom Furniture Heights

Year Level Recommended Chair Seat Height Recommended Table Height
Prep 300–310 mm 520–525 mm
Years 1–2 340–350 mm 580 mm
Years 3–4 380 mm 630–635 mm
Years 5–6 420–430 mm 680–700 mm
Years 7–10 430–460 mm 700–750 mm
Years 11–12 460 mm 720–750 mm
Taller Senior Students / Adults 460–500 mm 720–805 mm

How to Choose the Correct Chair Height

Chair height should generally be selected before table height.

When seated correctly:

  • The student's feet should sit comfortably on the floor.
  • Knees should be positioned naturally at approximately a right angle.
  • The front edge of the seat should not place pressure behind the knees.
  • The student should be able to sit back comfortably against the chair.
  • Shoulders should remain relaxed rather than raised while working.

Once the appropriate chair height has been selected, choose a table or desk height that allows the student to work comfortably without leaning excessively forward or lifting their shoulders.

A Quick Classroom Fit Check

A simple way to assess furniture sizing is to look at the student while they are seated.

Chair too high

If the student's feet cannot comfortably reach the floor, the chair is likely too high.

Chair too low

If the student's knees sit noticeably higher than their hips or their legs feel cramped, a taller chair may be more appropriate.

Table too high

If the student needs to raise their shoulders or arms significantly to work at the table, the working surface may be too high.

Table too low

If the student needs to lean or hunch forward to work comfortably, the table may be too low.

Primary School Furniture Heights

Primary school classrooms often need more than one furniture height because of the significant growth that occurs between Prep and Year 6.

As a general guide:

  • Prep: 300–310 mm chairs
  • Years 1–2: 340–350 mm chairs
  • Years 3–4: 380 mm chairs
  • Years 5–6: 420–430 mm chairs

Matching table heights generally progress from approximately 520 mm for younger students through to around 700 mm for upper-primary students.

High School Furniture Heights

Secondary school students generally require larger furniture, although student height can vary considerably throughout Years 7–12.

For most secondary classrooms, chair seat heights between 430 mm and 460 mm are commonly suitable, paired with tables approximately 700–750 mm high.

A 460 mm seat height with a 720–750 mm table is a common general-purpose combination for senior secondary students and many adult learning environments.

For particularly tall students, larger furniture sizes may be appropriate.

Furniture Sizing Is a Guide, Not a Rule

Year level alone should not determine furniture size.

When furnishing an entire classroom or school, consider:

  • the physical size of the students
  • the range of year levels using the space
  • whether rooms are shared between different classes
  • the type of learning activities taking place
  • whether adjustable-height furniture would provide greater flexibility

In spaces used by students of significantly different heights, incorporating more than one chair height or using adjustable tables can provide a better result than specifying a single furniture size throughout.
